Burlap is an amazingly flexible, sturdy, diverse, inexpensive way to have a most tactile experience and create a most unusual, if not bizarre, creation at the same time.
Ingredients: Burlap (natural is best), wheat paste or metalyn cellulose (methyl cellulose also), newspapers and small containers i.e. empty yogurt containers.
Newspapers are crumpled but left 'loose'. Three full sheets, one thickness only. Burlap (approx 18" square for a life size mask) is dipped in goop and left quite wet. Molding over the newspapers is the challenge. Best to start with an extra piece of crumpled newspaper and place it under the wet burlap wherever you want the nose. Grab with the free hand on the outside and push your thumbs into the nose hole areas. The molding has begun.
Mold the eyes and mouth in a similar fashion. SQUEEZE. Use the containers for wide eyes or mouths. Round balls of newspaper can also be molded over for eyes.
